Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, more popularly referred to as simply LU, is a state-related HBCU university located in southern Chester County, which is located in the US state of Pennsylvania and has a population estimated at a number of more than 433 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Chester County is the highest-income county in the state and the 24th in the nation, and its county seat is West Chester.
LU was established in April, 1854, and it is USA's first degree-granting historically black university. The institution provides a liberal-arts and science-based undergraduate and graduate education to students of every race and nationality. LU adopted its current name in 1866, after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln's athletic teams are known as the Lions, which compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, volleyball and softball. Their distinctive colors are orange and blue.
